I want to hear your opinions on a car that I have a strange lust for.

Kinja'd!!!

A Mono-white Merkur XR4ti. Not just any XR4ti, a mono-white 5-speed (with heated seats too, because, hey who doesn't love heated seats?). I'm still hunting for a reasonably priced one on craigslist that doesn't look like it's been sitting in a redneck's backyard for 9 years, buried in 4 feet tall grass with the front interior stripped out, empty Pennzoil jugs in the trunk, and topped off with newspapers from the Clinton administration. Okay maybe I went overboard with that, but you get the picture. I'm looking for a very nice one. And I've seen nice ones go for quite cheap prices (under 3000$). Which makes it all the more appealing for a first car. Yes a first car. So factor that into your opinions too. I do possess some mechanical aptitude, so I'm not afraid to fix the occasional maintenance issue. But I have my dad for the heavy lifting right?

I don't really know a whole lot about them, but I do think they're cool. Sorry that wasn't much help. I will say that if that's what you really want, and you're confident you can deal with any problems it may have, just get it.

Bad idea. You want something reliable as a first car.

If you can find the one you like for a good price, do it. Recommended: get onto the XR4ti forums and find out what the common problems are. There may even be people selling reasonably priced ones in good shape. (or not, you never know) NASIOC seemed to be the best place to get WRXs and STis that had mods but the owners understood that the mods didn't add to the value.

Get it! Just make sure to keep it maintained, and always perform maintenance that needs to be done as soon as possible.

Please, for the love of God, don't buy a shitty car or some finicky shitbox with parts that are only sourced in continental Europe if it's the only way you can get to class/work. When it's pouring and in the low-50s, the last thing you want when you turn the key is silence.

I got an 18-year-old sports sedan as my first car. While it was a Honda product, it wasn't exempt from 18-year-old car problems ranging from broken or missing trim to more serious stuff like failing seals and a fucked up brake master cylinder. It's not fun practicing sphincter clenching because your brake pedal goes to the floor during regular stop-go traffic. Trust me on that.

Yes, it's fun making rude noises with the go pedal and sneering at people in their 3,000lb subcompacts but you'll quickly feel vulnerable when some dumb shit decides to play NASCAR and draft at 80 mph. It'll at least distract you from watching the fuel needle drop and your bank account cringe when you fuel up with premium, as these XR4tis came with turbo motors. If you drive like a Jalop (that is, with careful vigor), it's probably going to happen a lot. Get ready for $30-40 fill-ups.

All good points, but like I said, I won't buy a shitbox with a list of mechanical problems and then some. That may be asking for too much though on a 25 year old car. My 2nd first car choice is an Audi A4 from about 2003 or so. If you're willing to accept high mileage ones, you can get one for under 4 or 5 grand.

Already been stalking the Merkur club of america forums, seen plenty of good ones come and go on the classifieds. I should have added money is tight right now, my parents are having to juggle my racing while barely making enough to sustain us.

All part of my plan. I'm a car enthusiast, and as such I'll see that she gets the best treatment possible.
